I’m a geologist by background with a PhD in FFT-based time series analysis. I work in the oil industry and my username stems from the Seven Sisters, a once powerful oil cartel which dominated the market from the mid-1940s to the 1970s.

Like geology, the technical analysis (TA) of financial time series relies on historical data. Both are scientific disciplines in that they look for objective evidence to separate useful from useless ideas. In his book ‘Evidence-based technical analysis’ David Aaronson describes the ideal TA synergy between human experts and computers as follows:
“The synergy exists because the information processing abilities of these two entities are complimentary - computers are strong where humans are weak and visa versa. I am referring specifically to computers armed with data mining software and humans possessing expertise in a particular domain: TA, cytology, oil field geology, etc.”
