Importing Into a Live Book

I am trying to import the transactions from a paper portfolio into a live book. No matter what I try, I get a “too few fields” error message. The steps I have taken were:

  1. Download the transactions as a csv.

  2. Open it in OpenOfrfice

  3. Save it as a tsv.

  4. copy it into the import window & submit.

I tried everything I could think of: deleting all columns except the ones listed on the submit screen. I even converted the date from YYYY-MM-DD to MM/DD/YYYY. Does anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong.

I'm not sure where you're copying from, but when you list a file in a terminal (using cat, less, etc.) and copy from the terminal window, you're copying the rendered output, not the original characters. Your clipboard gets the visual representation (spaces), not the original tab characters.

That's my theory.

I don't know how to get around that.

You are correct. I opened a second text file & pasted into it. When I made it show the special characters, the tabs disappeared. An interesting dilemma. How do you upload a tsv file into a text window?

Even if I figure it out, it is irrelevant to what I was trying to do. I used a paper portfolio to track my buys and sells. When I upgrade to “backtest” this month, I noticed that the reported statistics were better in books, e.g. turnover than they are in a paper portfolio. I was trying to see how well I actually did.

The simulated book tells how well you would have done; not how well you actually did.

The live book tells how well you do going forward. Not how well you have done in the past.
