Portfolio Management Software

Who likes the portfolio management software they are using enough to recommend it?

I have used excel, and years ago Quicken and then MS Money to manage my personal finances. I’m now looking to go one better, and manage for a few others and also want to be able to slice and dice performance reporting- by owner, by P123/other system, and still reconcile to brokerage accounts.

Given that I’m now opening up new positions in the market, the timing is right for new software.

I’ve done a number of searches and found a few sysems (Stator and Fund Manager to name two) that look interesting. All have their shortcomings. Stator is Aussie focused with its tax reporting and doesn’t offer CFA style performance reporting while Fund Manager slicing and dicing is limited to a hierarchical tree concept.

Who is using what, and what would you recommend?

Any and all discussions with pros/cons much appeciated!

(I now see a similar thread was run about two years ago - still would like to see any new/addition recommendations and continued comments on Fund Manager)

Thanks,
Carl

Crakes,

I have reviewed and looked at Cognity system (see) http://www.finanalytica.com/?p=2&lm=37

This costs a lot. I can’t afford it either, but it is a cool tool.

Best,
Tom

Looks like a solid, in depth risk management tool. I’m looking more for a portfolio “tracking” tool - so that I can report on performance.

The price tag and risk management technology they feature is a little over my head. Here is the link to the Risk Parity article that I mentioned on another thread yesterday:

https://content.putnam.com/panagora/pdf/risk_party_portfolios.pdf

Nelson Freeburg enhanced it in Formula Research by using maximum drawdown instead of standard deviation. I think if you look at this you might find it useful in managing risk across your portfolio until you can get a group to go in on a neat tool like the one you found.

Who likes their portfolio management software?

Good luck,
Carl

Time to resurrect this one

I’m looking for a program to track historical performance of one or more portfolios. I’d like to be able to differentiate between investment performance and investment performance including cash deposits. I believe these are commonly called TWRR (Time-Weighted) and IRR (Money-Weighted) returns.

The ability to import from CSV and other common formats would be very helpful as well.

What are you guys using at the moment for this? What have you tried? I’ve tried so far: Fund Manager 2014, Investment Account Manager, iCarra, StockMarketEye, Moneydance, and a couple of Excel spreadsheets. None have worked well.

On my list to try are: Quicken, Stator

There has to be something out there, so let me know. Thanks!

Take a look at CapTools…not pretty but appears to have what you’re looking for and reasonably priced (those with robust performance measurement don’t come cheap)

Also, here’s a recent review of a couple of other systems:

Good luck

Now that actual transactions update portfolios and books, it wouldn’t take a huge amount to make P123 a fully fledged portfolio manager. Most of it is there already.
