Profitable newsletters

So I wanted to share my personal favorite free and subscription-only newsletters where I have significantly benefited/profited from the information. There is so much knowledge within this community and I wanted to get feedback/reviews on other resources that I should consider incorporating into my trading arsenal.

Free site: http://www.decisionmoose.com
I really enjoy reading the in-depth weekly commentary here. They use different asset classes for investment (i.e. money market, gold, Asia, Latin America, etc.). Plus, they have a good track record of beating the S&P500. I been following this site for about 2 years now. Approximately 13% annual returns.

Paid site: http://www.pointbinvestments.com
This is a site geared towards traders. They are long/short the S&P500 using SSO & SDS – and scale in and out of positions. Real time alerts, and excellent record. I’ve been following this site since earlier this year. My P&L for selectively incorporating their signals is up approximately 60%.

Any others resources that I should be investigating?

Happy holidays.

I also follow decisionmoose and allocate a portion of my portfolio based on his calls, plus I found his commentary on current market conditions to be insightful.

I also follow meb faber’s portfolio tactical asset allocation model that allocates among five broad investment categories. Current signals and the reference paper can be found at
http://www.mebanefaber.com/timing-model/

I also follow the Moose. He is going to start charging a fee soon - maybe this week. He said it would be a small fee, but I dont know how much. If its reasonable, I will subscribe.

I been using www.fibtimer.com for a few years now. I dont have any way to quantify my returns, but I can say that the returns they show on their site are accurate/real time. A lot of these market timing sites post results that are based on their models backtest results - not real life signals. I base 45% of my stock allocation (long, short or cash) on FibTimers signals and 5% on the moose’s signals. The other 50% is based on my opinion. I should probably take my opinion out of the equation since fibtimer’s market timing has been a lot better then mine.

I tried a few other newsletters in the past, but they were all disasters. For example, Dines and the SilverInvestor.

Hi,
Good discussion. I also follow the Moose and Mebane Faber’s blog http://www.mebanefaber.com/ (which is more than just discussion of his timing signal - a variation of which I use for my 401K).

It’s not a newsletter but the XLQ add-in for Excel provides functions to pull a variety of current and historical stock data into a spreadsheet without needing to be an Excel guru. I’ve found it to be extremely helpful in backtesting things I can’t test in P123 and in tracking my portfolio. It’s available here: http://www.qmatix.com/XLQ.htm. It comes in two versions priced at a one time cost of $80 or $130. I bought it in September and it’s been invaluable to me.

Don

Seconding Don’s recommendation for XLQ. Powerful, flexible, easy to use. Great customer service too, BTW.

Dan,

How long have you used FibTimers?

Thx.
Tom

Tom,
I’ve been using FibTimer since Dec 2007.

Also, I agree with the others regarding XLQ. I’ve been using that for several years now to monitor my portfolio and the markets in general with real time data from Interactive Brokers and historical data from Yahoo.

Yes, and what can be achieved with all this? Selecting stocks? Timing the market?

Hi,

With XLQ, testing of alternative entries and exits (vs. just close/close or open/open), including stops, limit orders, profit targets, etc. Also, real time monitoring of portfolio and of trading candidates.

Don

FibTimer is for market timing. I use XLQ to retrieve real time quotes into a spreadsheet so I can monitor my holdings during the day. I dont use it for backtesting.

Great discussion! I will look into XLQ. Thank you

Pointbinvestments does not seem to be accessible. Link does not work.

Here’s another interesting site and newsletter with a pretty good track record;

I have my own free website www.moonrunreport.com. The portfolios are based on P123 models.
