Gold and silver! This will ultimately be a great short sometime in the future. Reminds me of 2011
Trump ‘immediately’ imposes 25% tariffs on countries that do business with Iran. China’s on the list
Congrats! Silver has been doing great
Can Greenland become independent though? I think there is an agreement in place they can do so and if the US offers each Greenland citizen 500,000 per person who is to say they do not say yes? Sounds far fetched I agree but within the realm of possibility
I don’t think independence is what Trump is after.
Yes it is not but would be step one to leave Denmark so could be the initial step. Greenland Self-Government Act, provides the legal framework for Greenland to pursue independence from Denmark
SZ,
I saw the video earlier about Greenland protesting against the annex. Greenland only has a population of less than 50,000 and it is like all of them were out protesting. The $0.5 mio payment per person is not going to work for Greenland to leave Denmark.
Let me find the link and I will post it later.
Here it is, this is the one in Denmark
This is the one in Greenland

I agree it is all unlikely, but it is hard to see Greenland’s people turning down 500,000 if it ever makes referrendum. Denmark would definitely oppose it for sure
Yeah there is zero chance of any of this happening.
I’m roughly 1000% percent certain this will not happen
SZ and test_user,
It keeps coming back to rare earths:
Greenland holds an estimated 1.5 MILLION metric tons of rare earth reserves.
This makes Greenland the 8th largest holder of rare earth reserves. Even more important?
Greenland had effectively ZERO rare earth production in 2025. Production is near zero due to lack of funding and necessary infrastructure.
Greenland is estimated to have up to $5 trillion worth of natural resources.
This is equivalent to roughly ~20% of US GDP and almost entirely untapped. Greenland is incredibly valuable.
This is why White House keep saying it wants Greenland for National Security.
Regards
James
It makes no sense though: CNN
The US already has more identified rare earth reserves than Greenland though, but could definitely be part of the calculus along with missile defense. Acquiring Greenland would greatly boost those reserves.
test_user,
Great link.
I think the White House advisers to Trump does not want US to dependent on China for rare earths.
Thus, they maybe willing to consider paying 10 times the cost to mine in Greenland.
Another point is that it takes years for China to setup the infrastructure to refine most of the rare earths after they have been mined. But like Venezuela hard oil that is also hard to refine. Trump only sees the benefits from his own perspective (simple and short term).

Its amazing me to that people still do not understand Trump negotiating tactics, or maybe they choose to ignore it. This is straight out of his “Art of the Deal” play book. He demands outrageous things before negotiations so his real expectations seem very reasonable in comparison. He has done this his entire career and will continue to do it because it has worked so well. There is no chance Trump will “invade” Greenland. Zero, zilch, none, goose egg. The entire idea is comical. He will get some kind of military base and mineral deal, then on to the next outrageous threat.
On another note, if Trump does something to cause the market to go down, it’s a certainty he will do something to cause it to go back up. He views the market as a gauge of his effectiveness.
I think you are right but only to a certain extent.
Since his second term, he has become more unhinged after removing anyone in the current administration who does not bow to him. He is acting the same way at the international stage, He is now more authoritarian than ever comparing to the first term and throughout his whole career.
He did take miltary strike in Venezuela and now take the oil.

James
EDIT : Algoman, Pls don’t let my response stop you from posting your reply. I saw you were typing it up.
The only reason why there is no large scale mining or oil production in Greenland is because the Greenlanders! They have had offers that would have made them all "millionaires", but they have been turning them down over and over again. They want their land untouched.
As late as 2021 a ban came in to effect of oil exploration and (most) mining, because the Greenlanders want their pristine land to be untouched. It not is lack of funding. It's like USA learned nothing form history of their Indigenous people, you can't buy culture or pride.
The reality is, Greenland is a massive burden to Denmark (they cost Denmark a fortune), Greenlanders don't like the "imperialists" of Denmark. But one thing the Greenlanders disllike even more is a bigger imperialist like US and Denmark hate being bullied by some one like US. And now, given the history of Denmark and Greenland, Denmark has no choice then to stand up for the Greenlanders and their interests.
If Washington had played their cards right from the start, Denmark would have happily given away Greenland for free.
The amount of uneducated tweets I have read about Greenland the last few days is just crazy. Most can't even name the capital of Greenland, but they all have an alternative plan how to achieve Trumps goal (always big guns or piles of money), every uneducated tween/article just makes things worse.
Does the average Greenlander own a lot of land? Or do they vote against economic development because they do not have land to begin with? It would be interesting to find out, as it is different to vote against development when you own all the land vs when you do not. My educated guess after reading this is basically Greenlanders must own no land. This kind of thing happens usually when property rights are limited.
No, you can not own land in Greenland, land can not belong to a man, the land is for the people. It's hard for a westerner grasp the concept, an it just as hard it is for the Indigenous people grasp the concept of land being claimed by a man.
The first thing Greenland did when Trump started to talk about Greenland, was to pass a law so only Greenlandic, Faroese, or Danish citizens can build on Greenland or buy a property (on the communal land). So by law, foreigners are not allowed to build on Greenland any more, direct response to Trumps threats.
Ah makes perfect sense. Yes that severely reduces any incentive to develop. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been reading about the economic history of the world and have seen instances like these where if the incentives are not just right, countries do not industrialize
I don't really agree. Most mines in the world are developed on leased land, mainly so you can revoke the lease if the mining company don't behave. You can't own land in China, they are industrializing quite well... It's just history repeating itself, this has happened so many times before when western culture clash with Indigenous cultures, the initiative that works in the end is a gun to the head or worse. It's very sad to witness.
