I have run a test on a large proportion of the publicly available ranking systems to see if there is anyone interesting to work on.
It has been tested against:
• A universe of around 500 shares, spread across all sectors
• It has been tested 10 years back in time
• It has been tested based on a portfolio of 20 shares
• Rebalancing is every 4 weeks
• There are no rules for sales beyond the ranking going below < 60
The universe has an Annualized Return of 25%
For the purchase criterion, two are set:
• Volume: AvgDailyTot(20)>( 1000* 1000)
• Capsize: FRank (“MktCap”,#universe,#desc)<30
I’m a little startled, because it appears that the vast majority of them provide either poor or marginally better outcomes than the average of the universe I’m comparing it against.
The best are those I’ve worked with, but I’m afraid they’re a little overfitted, so they won’t produce the same outcomes in the future.
That’s why I’m wondering:
- How many people here use the publicly available ranking systems?
- How often do you make changes to the ranking systems?
- Which systems do you use with good results?
- Do you mostly only use ranking systems, or mostly screen systems?
Nevertheless, I welcome anything input on how you proceed while building a ranking system. (In addition to what is already discussed in the Webinars).
